Psi Chi
Psi Chi is the International Honor Society in Psychology founded in 1929 for the purposes of encouraging, stimulating, and maintaining excellence in scholarship, and advancing the science of psychology.
Psi Chi is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and an affiliate of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Association for Psychological Science (APS).
Who Can Join Psi Chi?
Juniors and seniors at St. Ambrose with a declared Psychology major or minor, have a GPA of at least 3.6, and have completed at least 9 credit hours of psychology classes.
SAU also has a Psychology Club, which is open to any student with an interest in psychology. In fact, the Psi Chi Chapter and the Psychology Club work together. We hold joint meetings and events, which allows us to make a larger impact and provide more opportunities for our members.
In fact, the chapter and club partnered with SAU staff to participate in the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) walk. In 2018, we raised almost $5,000 and were one of the largest groups to participate in the walk. This 5k helps increase awareness and reduce the stigma of mental illness and is a part of a larger movement.
Our Psi Chi advisors are supportive of our academic goals and host a coffee hour for chapter members. It is an opportunity to get to know each other, discuss graduate school and where we are in the application process. Our Psi Chi advisors provide contact information and encourage us to talk to alumni who attended graduate programs, offer helpful information for graduate school interviews, and tips on how to ask for letters of recommendation.
The Psi Chi Induction Ceremony is a formal, on-campus event for new inductees, family members, and friends, and it highlights the amazing accomplishments of current and new members. In 2018, the ceremony included a presentation by Coe College Assistant Professor of Psychology, Scout Kelly PhD, who discussed her research on understanding successful and unsuccessful strategies in the initiation and maintenance of physical activity.
